Skiing injury & HBOT

Updated: Dec 2, 2024

My story begins with a skiing trip to France. I was having a fantastic time until disaster struck! I was involved in a skiing accident where I broke my tibia and fibula bones in my leg. I was operated on in France where the surgeons inserted a metal rod into my leg to stabilise the bone and promote healing. Four weeks later I needed to have another operation to remove the stitches.

Unfortunately, three months later I was admitted back to hospital as the metal rod in my leg had become infected and needed to be removed. A few months later the doctors removed the plaster from my leg. At that point, I couldn't fully hold my weight and I needed to use a crutch to get around. My leg was very swollen and I was told it would take a while until it was healed properly.

I spoke with my consultant, Mr Khunda who is a well-known orthopaedic surgeon about whether Hyperbaric Oxygen would help heal my leg. He didn't know much about Oxygen therapy but said I should try it and see what happens. I did 25 Hyperbaric oxygen sessions and the results were amazing. My leg rapidly healed, the swelling went down and I could now fully hold my weight. My consultant was amazed at the drastic speed at which my leg had healed in. So much so that he wanted to find out more about Hyperbaric oxygen and the science behind it.

As a side point before my accident, I had terrible arthritis in both my knees. Whenever I would play tennis I would take ibuprofen to help with the pain and would also have to wear kneecaps to support my knees. However, after I did Hyperbaric therapy I thank G-d no longer have knee pain. I now can play tennis 4 times a week which has helped me lose weight and I feel like a different person. I can solely attribute my knee recovery to Hyperbaric oxygen therapy as this was the only treatment I was doing at that time.

I am very grateful to Sarah Dafner for making Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy available locally in Manchester.
