Concussion
What is concussion?
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects can be temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance, and coordination.
Concussions are usually caused by a blow to the head. Violent shaking of the head and upper body also can cause concussions.
Some concussions cause you to lose consciousness, but most do not.
Falls are the most common cause of concussion. Concussions are also common if you play a contact sport, such as football or soccer. Most people usually recover fully after a concussion.
Concussions stretch and bruise nerves and blood vessels and cause chemical changes in your brain that result in a temporary loss of normal brain function. A single concussion usually doesn’t cause permanent damage to your brain. However, multiple concussions over a lifetime may result in structural changes in your brain.
Concussions are not usually life-threatening but, the effects from a concussion can be serious and last for days, weeks or even longer.
How does HBOT help treat concussion?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can increase healing in the brain after traumatic brain injury. HBOT revives blood flow and oxygen circulation in damaged areas of the body. This allows your cells to begin healing tissues and prevents cell death.
HBOT is a non-invasive and convenient treatment option for those struggling with concussion symptoms. Medical studies have shown that hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves outcomes in TBI patients. The use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to treat concussions and traumatic brain injuries in patients aims to relieve symptoms and speed up recovery by promoting damaged tissue repair and angiogenesis, or blood vessel growth.
