Retinitis Pigmentosa

What is Retinitis Pigmentosa?

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of rare eye diseases that affect the retina (the light-sensitive layer of tissue in the back of the eye). RP is a genetic disease and symptoms generally start in childhood. The most common symptoms of RP is loss of night vision. Parents of children with RP may notice their child having problems moving around at night or adjusting to dim lights easily. RP makes cells in the retina break down slowly over time, causing vision loss. Another symptom of RP is loss of peripheral (side) vision where the person has difficulties seeing out of the corners of the eye, this symptom over time develops until the person will only have central (tunnel) vision. RP is a progressive condition and effects people some people quicker than others. Eventually those suffering from RP lose their side vision and central vision.

How does HBOT help treat Retinitis Pigmentosa?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been shown to increase oxygen levels in blood plasma and tissue, studies have shown that this therapy is effective in slowing down the degenerative process of RP. Furthermore research on HBOT confirm it to be a safe alternative approach for RP patients with minimum side effects. HBOT contributes to the stabilization of visual function , visual acuity, visual field and ERG responses.
